Product definition

Whatever your product - be it a large one-off system, a new benchtop scientific instrument, or a volume manufacture handheld device or consumable item - and whatever the market you are targeting, getting the user requirements well established and well documented is key to the success of your programme. Too often the designers are let loose on the design before all the constraints, the must-haves and the nice-to-haves have been clearly identified and defined.

David can provide the technical expertise required early on in a project, to ensure that the key requirements are well understood and that the end-user/customer is well aware of the possible limitations and challenges that come with technology in general. His experience and his attention to detail will help you manage this conceptual design phase to ensure the foundation is in place to maximise the chance of setting onto the right foot right from the start of the project, significantly reducing the need for re-works later on.

Taking the lead

There are times when having additional flexible on-demand resource that can be counted on can make the difference to a product development strategy.

With tremendous experience as lead engineer, David will be this additional resource needed to guarantee that the end product is robust, reliable, designed with DFM/DFA in mind, and is a good match to the customer/end-user's requirements. David has led multi-discipline activities (mechanical, electronics, software) on a number of occasions, for products destined to applications he wasn't even familiar with in the first place. The extent of his involvement is simply dependent on your requirements - be it for 2hrs to take part in a design review or 'x' days a week for 'y' weeks to help throughout the project.
As an alternative to working with your team on your premises, David can also take the whole piece of work off your hands so you can concentrate on your core activities. This works well when a test rig is required for your product for example or for designing the casing that would house your electronics/sensor assembly, etc. He would use his own design and engineering skills and work with partners/associates to deliver the package back to you, as per a previously agreed set of deliverables, timeframe, and fixed price.

Project management

Do you need someone to run a project for you, taking the development from the generation of concepts to the handover to manufacturers? Do you need someone who interacts with the customer/client on a daily basis to ensure their expectations are managed professionally?

As interim programme/project manager, David will take ownership of the project plan, the budget, ensure exercises such as FMEA and traceability matrix are done in a timely fashion. David has managed a variety of projects ranging from R&D engineering to commissionning and installation of capital equipment for UK/US customers.
